Officer of the Quarter - Cathy Sanders

Our Officer of the Quarter is Cathy Sanders. Since 2023, she has served as Lodge Chaplain, leading all the prayers at our regular monthly meetings, required special services, and annual Installation of Officers, as well as at any of the DD Clinics and Visitations held here. Upon each occasion, Cathy brings a steady presence of dignity and reflection to the proceedings. Beginning in 2024, Cathy became our Hospital Visitation Chair, assuming responsibility for sending out get-well and sympathy cards on behalf of the Lodge. Her beautifully written, heartfelt notes have been deeply appreciated by and brought great comfort to their recipients. In addition to her regular duties, Cathy willingly offers her help and support with Lodge operations and outreach efforts throughout the year. She gladly lends a hand in the kitchen on Officer Cook Nights and on other Friday evenings as needed. She provides hands-on support across all aspects of our grant-funded initiatives, helping plan, prepare, and deliver programs that serve Veterans and families in our community. Cathy’s devotion to others is further reflected in her more than 30 years as an active member of her church. Since joining the congregation, she has taken on a variety of leadership roles, including Fellowship Chair and Mission Chair, consistently supporting and uplifting her fellow parishioners and those in need. In all she does—within the Lodge and beyond—Cathy is ever guided by the principle of Brotherly Love, truly exemplifying what it means to be an Elk.

March Elk of the Month - Jean Maddox

Our Elk of the Month for March is Jean Maddox who joined our Lodge in 2007. Jean is known for her strong work ethic and attention to detail. She provides steady, reliable service to our members, and helps maintain a smooth, calm operation on even the busiest evenings. Jean is consistent and fair to all members, attentive without being intrusive, and a good listener. Jean is discreet with personal matters and observant of members’ well-being, contributing to a welcoming yet orderly environment. Behind the scenes, Jean readily shares her knowledge and expertise in support of Lodge efforts and activities. Utilizing her proven fundraising experience, she recently organized a “Box of Cheer” raffle that yielded $900 for our Lodge Scholarship Fund, furthering our dedication to investing in local students and enriching our community. In an Elks Lodge, a bartender is the key point of contact who helps shape the overall member experience. Jean excels in that role, and we are grateful for the positive spirit and steady presence she brings to our Lodge.

February Elk of the Month - Keith Holbrook

Our Elk of the Month for February is Keith Halbrook who joined our Lodge three years ago and, in that time, has become an invaluable member of our Maintenance team. A loyal Elk, he continues to maintain his membership with our Lodge though he resides in Gainesville—an enduring reflection of his dedication and pride in our Lodge.

Keith brings a strong range of skills and practical knowledge to every project he undertakes. He is a true self-starter who readily identifies issues, makes repairs, and keeps the House Committee Chair informed before and after the work is completed. His efforts have saved the Lodge significant expense while improving our facilities.

Over the past year, Keith has assisted with the Tiki Bar remodel in September 2025, replaced broken tile around the inside bar in November 2025, and modified the sneeze shield in the serving area that same month. In addition, Keith frequently volunteers in the kitchen as needed—most often on Saturdays and sometimes Fridays—always without hesitation. Keith is consistently encouraging and supportive of the Exalted Ruler and House Committee Chair, offering both hands-on help and steady encouragement. His partner, Christine Borchers, regularly works alongside him and is also an important part of many of these successful projects. An all-around great guy, Keith exemplifies the spirit of Elkdom through his reliability, initiative, and positive attitude. Please join us in thanking Keith—and Christine—for their continued service and commitment

January Elk of the Month - Mike McNaney

Our January Elk of the Month is Mike McNaney, a member of our Lodge since 1997. Twenty-one years ago, Mike established the Parade of Trees at Spring Park in partnership with our City government. What began as a modest effort has grown into a beloved holiday tradition, now featuring 246 lighted Christmas trees and drawing visitors from across Northeast Florida.

Behind the scenes, the work required to bring this display to life is substantial. Beginning as early as September each year, Mike starts recruiting his fellow Elks and friends to help transport the trees from storage to the Park. He then manages the electrical layout throughout the Park, evaluates each tree following delivery for needed repairs or replacement, and—just days before Christmas on Walnut Street—begins daily visits to ensure everything is ready for Santa’s arrival. By that special day, he will have on average already devoted around 150 hours to this project, with many more to follow through its close during the first week of January.

The Parade of Trees matters not only for its beauty, but for the way it connects our Lodge to the heart of the community we serve. This year, 34 Elks alongside City staff and 62 volunteers drawn from other organizations and the local citizenry, worked together to create a display that brightened the season for others. This spirit of cooperation, service, and generosity reflects the best of Elkdom, and we are grateful to Mike for his vision, leadership, and dedication in sustaining this cherished tradition year after year.

Officer of the Quarter - Greg Hughson, Sr.

We are proud to recognize Trustee Greg Hughson, Sr. as our Officer of the Quarter, honoring his exemplary dedication, leadership, and lifelong commitment to our Order.

Greg is a dependable volunteer at Lodge events. Each week, he assists at Tuesday Bingo, selling sheets with his signature friendliness and good humor. He frequently turns out to help at a variety of Lodge activities, always willing to lend a hand wherever he is needed.

His service reaches far beyond Green Cove Springs. At the Palatka Elks Lodge #1232, Greg served in an extraordinary range of roles, including Inner Guard, Chaplain, Secretary (10 years), Treasurer, Lodge Advisor, and Exalted Ruler. Later he went on to serve as District Vice President, and District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler for the Northeast.

As House Committee Chair, he continually demonstrates an outstanding ability to balance multiple priorities with precision and professionalism. Eric excels in managing Lodge operations and communications. His attention to detail and proactive approach ensure the Lodge operates efficiently and that members stay informed and engaged.

In addition to his regular duties, Eric has overseen several major projects in recent months — from coordinating the installation of new flooring to replacing the kitchen freezer and managing the Tiki Bar renovations in record time. Thanks to his resourcefulness and successful fundraising efforts, the upgrades to the outside bar were achieved with minimal cost to the Lodge. Eric also researched and arranged for the installation of both an ATM and a new gaming console, providing greater convenience and entertainment for our members.

Eric plays an active role in fundraising events throughout the year. For Memorial Day, he took the lead in organizing “Food, Fun, and Fireworks” to benefit the Lodge Scholarship. Eric has also provided event support for and actively participated in all of the Cornhole Chal-lenges. He is currently working with the Lodge Secretary to plan and promote the annual Holiday Food Drive for the Food Pantry.

Week after week you will find him working behind the grill, serving meals, and interacting with our members, to help ensure everyone has a great experience. His dedication and reliability have made him a deeply valued member of the Sunday team.

Howie also does a critical job that very few are willing to do. He changes the oil and thoroughly cleans the deep fryers on a regular basis, an essential task for both food quality and safety. Cleaning the fry-ers is a dirty job, and we appreciate Howie stepping up to handle it. He always makes sure the fryers are ready for both our every day use and our big events.

Whether it’s cooking in the heat, delivering meals to guests, preparing for special events, or stepping up wherever needed, Howie is always there with a smile and a helping hand. He also traveled the state alongside then Florida Elks State President Jim Hurst, serving as his Harry-Anna Chairman. Locally, Ron has served on both the Planning and Zoning Board and the City Council for Green Cove Springs, demonstrating the same dedication and leadership that we value so highly at the Lodge.
